Vietnam occupies leading positions in the global production of several agricultural commodities, ranking among the world’s top ten producers of rice, pork, oranges, cashew nuts and fish. The agribusiness sector plays an important role in Vietnam’s economy, accounting for 12.8% of GDP, 6.8% of national exports and 32.9% of employment at the end of 2020. The agribusiness industry faced three negative factors in 2020: 1) the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic; 2) adverse weather conditions that affected crop performance; and 3) the African Swine Fever outbreak. However, the sector managed to overcome the adverse context and its GVA expanded by 2.7% y/y in 2020, pushed up by higher production in two segments: livestock products and fisheries and aquaculture.
