Russia relies on thermal power sources to generate most of its electricity. The share of natural gas, coal and oil in the generation mix stood at 71% in 2018. Nuclear and hydropower are also well established, with respective shares of 10% and 18%, leaving a small chunk to renewable energy sources. Russia has an extensive power transmission network, comprising 146,000 km of high-voltage lines. The government controls the largest power-generating companies, all the hydro and nuclear capacities, as well as the entire transmission network.
