The metallic and non-metallic minerals mining sector (in Statistics Office data as mining and quarrying excluding coal and lignite) generated 1.4% of Poland’s GDP in 2019 and provided direct employment to 53,900 people. The main non-coal minerals extracted in Poland are copper, silver, zinc and lead, as well as many industrial minerals such as rock salt, sulfur, limestone, gypsum and natural aggregates. Poland is a strong global player in the production of copper, silver and salt, and also ranks among the top 20 zinc and lead mining countries globally. The sector is home to one of the country’s largest companies, the copper and silver miner KGHM Polska Miedz. While the metallic mineral mining segments are less fragmented, other segments, such as aggregates, are characterised by high levels of competition and the existence of many smaller players.
