The electric power generated revenue of PLN 133.5bn in 2018, which was equivalent to 6.3% of Poland's GDP. In 2019, electricity generation dropped by 3.5% y/y to 145 TWh, while consumption decreased by 0.7% y/y to 154.7 TWh. As a result, for the third consecutive year, Poland relied on imports to meet its domestic electricity demand. In recent years, the sector has witnessed a slow, but steady restructuring process, aimed at diversifying energy sources away from coal. This has prompted the development of new renewable energy-based plants in the country. Nevertheless, Poland’s electricity continues to come mainly from coal and lignite-fired units, which accounted for almost 76% of power generation in 2018.
