Poland has a developed and diversified chemical industry, which was the eighth-largest one in the EU in 2018. The country is also the home of one of the leading producers of fertilisers, plasticisers, polyeolfins, polystyrene and soda in Europe, including the state-controlled Grupa Azoty and the privately-held Synthos, Ciech and Basell Orlen Polyolefins. On the domestic front, the chemical sector has a major social and economic importance, accounting for 2% of the country’s GDP, 1.7% of the formal employment and 13.9% of the national exports in 2018. During the year, it was also one of the most appealing sectors for foreign investors, attracting 7.4% of the total FDI in Poland. The outlook for the sector is positive, as it will continue to benefit from a strong domestic demand and the ongoing internationalisation of the operations of local chemical producers.
