Peru is a comparatively small pharmaceutical market in Latin America (ranking eighth in terms of sales volume in 2017), with a relatively young and growing population. However, public health spending is expanding at a rapid pace, particularly in state-run health insurance schemes, and there is a small but rapidly developing private health insurance market. Patented drugs are the second-largest segment in the pharmaceutical market (after generics) but are set to gain importance in the coming years, favoured by an improved intellectual property regime and rising incidence of noncommunicable diseases. The local pharmaceutical industry is largely focused on the production of generic and OTC drugs, resulting in a chronic trade deficit in pharmaceuticals. In 2017, the trade deficit reached USD 777mn, as Peru covered 44.7% of its domestic demand with imported drugs.
