Malaysia Electric Power Sector Report 2016/2017

Available in: English

Malaysia is self-sufficient in terms of power generation, with natural gas and coal being the main fuels used in power generation. The Malaysian market comprises three main utilities companies that have the largest market share in the power generation segment in their respective. A number of IPPs generate power and sell it to the main utilities under the single-buyer model. Power transmission and distribution are controlled entirely by the main utilities. The National Grid in Peninsular Malaysia connects 99.9% of the population and communities of that region with the electricity grids of Thailand and Singapore. The power transmission systems in Sabah and Sarawak are less developed than that of Peninsular Malaysia: Sabah has only had a state-wide grid since 2007, while Sarawak grid connectivity is limited in the state’s vast inland areas.
