Malaysia's Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector accounted for 8.2% of GDP, growing бъ 5.9% y/y in 2020. With a share of 43.7%, palm oil was the major contributor to agricultural sector GDP in 2020, followed by livestock (15.1%), and fishing (10.2%). The share of rubber in the AFF GDP continues its downward trend over recent years, claiming only 2.2% in 2020. Apart from the industrial, so-called cash crops, other prominent agriculture activities include cultivation of paddy, fruits and vegetables. Palm oil and cocoa are primarily grown by large companies (estates), while rubber and the food crops are produced by smallholders. The sector, comprising plantations and other agriculture activities, employs large number of foreign workers. The non-Malaysian citizens employed in agriculture in 2020 were 502.4 thou people – 2.24% more than the non-citizen employees in 2019. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of food security in the country and the need for structural changes.
