Mexico’s construction sector had a lacklustre performance over the period 2012-2017, with its GVA rising at a CAGR of 0.9%. Among the main impediments to the sector’s growth was a change of government policy on housing development in 2013, which had a negative effect on some of the housing construction segment’s key players. In addition, the decline in the international price of oil – which is an important source of government revenue – has had a negative impact on the government’s ability to invest in housing developments and infrastructure projects since 2014. Increased economic uncertainty caused by presidential elections in 2017 and the debate about the future of NAFTA put additional pressure on sector’s performance during the year. Construction activities started to recover in the first half of 2018, almost entirely thanks to the reconstruction work needed after the earthquakes that hit the central part of Mexico in September 2017. This “reconstruction effect” should continue to boost sector activity in  2019. In addition, the construction sector will benefit from the development of those key infrastructure projects which have been prioritised by the new administration, as well as from diminishing uncertainty about trade relations with the US.
