Mexico Electric Power Sector 2019/2020

Mexico remains a regional leader in electricity generation. The positive results of the energy reform continue, on its way to Mexico’s energy independence and integration of clean energy sources. The wholesale market keeps attracting investment and boosting the electricity sector. Over the 2015-2018 period three long-term power capacity auctions were held with the participation of bidders from 10 different countries, attracting USD 9.1bn of investment to the sector. Another instrument for the expansion of the sector is the sale of clean energy certificates (CEL), which additionally stimulate the production of energy from clean sources. The government has maintained a firm stance on the restructuring of the sector. One of its latest proposals is for cost-based energy pricing which is expected to inevitably affect the supply and demand of electricity in Mexico.
