The COVID-19 pandemic severely impaired the operations of the Mexican automotive sector. It suffered from disruptions to global supply chains, lockdown restrictions and dwindling demand, both in the domestic market and the US – the main foreign destination. Accordingly, motor vehicle production plunged by 20.8% y/y to 3.2mn units in 2020, the lowest volume since 2013, pushing up idle capacity of the industry to 36.5%. This, in combination with the new trends in demand, have accelerated the ongoing restructuring of the product portfolio of carmakers in Mexico towards production of SUVs and electric vehicles (EVs). During the year, Volkswagen and Ford launched production lines for new SUVs, including an all-electric SUV in the case of Ford. At the same time, the Chinese group JAC Motors brought to the market three electric heavy vehicles assembled in Mexico.
