The steel sector contributes about 2% of the Indian economy’s total GVA, according to the Indian Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF). The sector employs 500,000 people directly and 2.5mn people indirectly. Indian crude steel production is the second-largest in the world after that of China. The global importance of Indian steel derives mainly from the country’s abundant iron-ore resources and the rising domestic demand fuelled by an expanding economy and by government infrastructure and construction projects. The construction sector absorbed 62% of overall steel consumption, while mechanical engineering accounted for 15% in FY2018, according to the most recent data available. Exports of iron and steel constituted 3.7% of the country’s total in FY2018, while iron and steel imports claimed a 3.1% share.
