India ranked fifth in renewable energy installed capacity in the world in 2018. Renewable energy sources accounted for around 20.1% of total installed electricity generation capacity in India by the end of FY2018. Wind energy is the dominant form of RE followed by solar energy: these accounted for 49% and 33% respectively of total RE capacity in March 2018. India is targeting 227 GW of installed RE capacity by March 2022 – including 100 GW from solar and 60 GW from wind – and 350 GW by 2030: the latter figure would imply a rise in the share of RES in total installed electricity generation capacity to 40%.
