In Q1 FY2022, the automotive output volume in India reached 4.51mn units. This figure was well below the average production volume of 6.67mn units reached over the last six quarters (from Q2 FY2020 to Q4 FY2021, excluding Q1 FY2021). On a quarterly basis, production fell by 36.1% q/q in Q1 FY2022, whereas on an annual basis, output increased by 205.2% due to the negative impact of COVID-19 experienced during Q1 FY2021. However, the output volume decreased by 37.2% compared to Q1 FY2020, i.e. before the pandemic. As the resurge in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant continues to negatively affect domestic demand, manufacturers produce below their capacity. At segment level, passenger and commercial vehicle production decreased by 24.8% q/q and 41.8 q/q, respectively (compared to Q1 FY2020, output in both segments fell by 16.6% and 41.2%, respectively). Two- and three-wheeler production declined by 38.4% q/q and 21.6% q/q, respectively (compared to Q1 FY2020, output also decreased by 40% and 39.4%, respectively).
