The real estate and construction sector in Indonesia has a priority in the government’s policy agenda. Because of this, the sector’s importance in the economic growth and job creation has increased in recent years. In 2019, the sector generated 13.5% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) with the construction segment accounting for 10.7% and the real estate for the remaining 2.8%. Almost 8.1mn people, or about 6.4% of the country’s workforce, were occupied in the sector in 2019. In their efforts to tap into the enormous potential for growth, foreign investors poured more than USD 15bn in the Indonesian real estate and construction sector over 2015-2019 (11% of total FDI). The Global Competitiveness Report 2019, prepared by the World Economic Forum (WEF), put Indonesia 72nd out of a total of 141 countries in the global infrastructure ranking.
