Indonesia has abundant mineral resources and is a major supplier to global markets of bauxite, tin, nickel, copper, zinc, lead, gold and coal. The country holds the world’s largest nickel reserves and was the top nickel producer in 2019. Indonesia ranks second in terms of tin reserves and production. In 2019, the mining and quarrying (M&Q) sector contributed 7.3% to the Indonesian economy. Coal and lignite mining accounted for 32% of the M&Q sector’s gross value added (GVA), while metal ores took an 8% share. Indonesia is a net exporter of mineral products – in 2019 it had a positive trade balance of USD 22.3bn. The M&Q sector provides employment to 1.4mn people and the major players in the sector are state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
