The Indonesian food and beverage manufacturing sector is an important source of economic growth and is seen by the government as a strategically important industry. It contributed 6.3% to the nominal GDP in 2018 and expanded faster than the overall economy in the period 2014-2018. The sector’s gross value added (GVA) increased by 11.1% to IDR 927tn in 2018. GVA growth eased to 9.2% in 2019 but the sector’s share of GDP increased to 6.4%. Indonesia is a major food producer, ranking among the top world producers of palm oil, natural rubber, cocoa, coffee and rice. However, the country has struggled to achieve self-sufficiency for key staple foods. Nevertheless, it is still a net importer of food and beverages, as a significant share of the raw materials for the food and beverage sector are sourced from overseas.
