Indonesia is home to ASEAN’s largest market for two- and four-wheel vehicles and the second largest motor vehicle producer. A number of global automotive brands have opened production sites in the country or plan to do so. Japanese brands dominate the domestic market. A major driver of economic growth, the automotive sector has been defined as a priority manufacturing sector in the ‘Making Indonesia 4.0’ industrial revolution roadmap. The sector accounted for about 7% of the manufacturing sector and 1.4% of the country’s GDP in 2020. Motor vehicle foreign trade generates hard currency for the economy with a positive balance of USD 2.3bn in 2020. The sector contributed to about 4% of total exports and 3% of imports. The relatively low motorisation rate and labour costs, together with a growing middle class will continue to drive growth in the sector.
