In 2020, COVID-19 interrupted the Colombian automotive industry’s recovery experienced in 2018 and 2019, leading to poor performance in terms of output, sales, exports and imports. Despite the troubles, in 2020 Colombia kept its position as the second largest motorcycle producer in Latin America with domestic sales as its main market. Motorcycle exports are low, while imports complement the domestic offer. As a result, the motorcycle segment presents chronic trade deficits. Although Colombia is the fourth-largest producer of four-wheel vehicles in Latin America, the scale of production is considerably lower than that of regional competitors. Four-wheel motor vehicle production has experienced a declining trend, worsened by the pandemic as Colombian consumers are increasingly choosing to buy imported four-wheel motor vehicles.
