In 2019, Colombia consolidated its positions as the second-largest motorcycle producer in Latin America, after Brazil, and the fourth-biggest manufacturer of four-wheel vehicles in the region. During the year, the domestic vehicle sales continued to grow, by 8.1% y/y, supported by strong household demand for motorcycles and light commercial vehicles, and a rebound in the sales of heavy vehicles to key industrial consumers. The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent national lockdown interrupted the positive performance of the domestic automotive sector. It posted double-digit declines in both production and sales in March-May 2020, as vehicle plants and car dealerships were forced to stop operations. Although activities began to resume in May 2020, the industry is expected to return to growth as early as in the first half of 2021.
