After recording a moderate 3.9% y/y increase of insurance premiums in 2018, China’s insurance market resumed its fast growth track in 2019, the insurance premium income rising by 12.2% y/y to RMB4.27tn. In terms of product breakdown, life insurance in the human insurance subsector remained a leader in the market contributing 53.4% of total insurance premiums in China. Within this subsector, health insurance achieved robust growth with an increase of 29.7% y/y in premiums, 5 pp more than in 2018. The income from health insurance accounted for 22.8% of the subsector’s total premiums. Given China’s considerable population base and growing demand for health management and improved social security, the human insurance subsector in China is anticipated to contribute almost half of the increase in global life premiums in 2020, according to the forecasts by the multinational professional service provider Deloitte.
