In the second quarter 2020, China’s healthcare sector continued be challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the coronavirus has been affecting the socio-economic reality in the country, in July 2020 China’s State Council released a document outlining a number of measures expected to prompt investment, improve business environment and reduce the impact of the pandemic in the country. One of the main measures stipulated in the guideline is lowering market entry barriers in some industries, including healthcare, and promotion of new business models. The major objective stressed in the guideline is to develop healthcare services, online healthcare in particular. Providers of internet-based services will be permitted to tap into the areas of diagnosis and treatment, while the internet-based services should be covered by government health insurance. In order to increase transparency in the online healthcare segment, China is expected to introduce a unified approval standard for the launch of online healthcare businesses, according to the State Council.
