China's healthcare system is hospital-centric, with public hospitals delivering approximately 90% of the inpatient and outpatient care consumed in the country today in both hospitals and basic medical institutions*. Nearly 40% of hospitals’ revenue is generated by pharmaceutical sales. The Chinese healthcare market has been growing strongly, focusing on the treatment of chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and respiratory conditions. China's current shortage of quality public healthcare services has resulted in rising demand for private medical care. However, private healthcare is underdeveloped and faces difficulties in finding experienced doctors, as many of the best ones are employed by public hospitals via exclusivity clauses. Doctors in public hospitals are seriously underpaid, which makes them dependent on additional unofficial income from pharmaceutical companies and patients. Hospitals generate nearly half of their revenues from drug sales and, despite being public, receive grossly inadequate funding from the government. In addition, many doctors are reluctant to quit their public hospital jobs because of their perceived higher social status compared to working in private healthcare. The country had 96% medical insurance coverage in 2015, but rising medical service and drug prices have caused out-of-pocket payments to grow instead of decline. The country has a household savings rate of about 50%, the highest in the world, largely because of fears of unexpected, high healthcare costs. Looking for investment opportunities in China’s healthcare sector, foreign businesses may consider developing private hospitals and healthcare centres. China is focusing on boosting operations of lower-level medical facilities countywide. Overseas partnerships are welcome in the healthcare information systems and technology segments, as well as in e-healthcare and hospital management.
