Following a challenging first half of 2020, Chinese economic growth improved in the third quarter of the year. The GDP increase of 4.9% y/y registered in the period was mainly attributed to the recovery of domestic consumer market and the revival of the retail sector amid improved control of the COVID-19 pandemic. Total retail sales of consumer goods in Q3 2020 rebounded to RMB 10,107bn, which was down by just 0.4% compared to the corresponding period of 2019, after the drastic declines of 19.6% and 3.8% y/y in Q1 and Q2 of 2020, respectively. The commodity retail sales of consumer goods rose by 0.3% y/y to RMB 9,045bn in Q3 2020, largely driven by positive performance of the country’s auto market and growing demand in the luxury sector. In terms of major product categories, sales of food and beverage rose by 6.6% y/y to RMB 532bn while car sales picked by 11.1% y/y to RMB 1,059bn in the third quarter of 2020. The pandemic has spurred the popularity of e-commerce and prompted an intensive digitalisation of the retail industry.
