China beverage sector’s revenue decreased by 0.1% y/y to RMB 383.9bn in the second quarter of 2020, reflecting the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic. Beverage retail sales in April-June 2020 increased by 9.4% y/y to RMB 55.9bn, thanks to increased demand for beer and soft drinks. The production of beer in Q2 2020 climbed by 5.7% y/y to 11.6bn litres, as imports dropped sharply. The output of soft drinks during this period was up by 0.1% y/y to 47mn tonnes. Baijiu production in the second quarter of 2020 fell by 5.7% y/y to 1.8bn litres, due to decreased demand. Grape wine output in Q2 2020 plummeted by 50.7% y/y to 69mn litres.
