China Beverage Sector Report 2019 2nd Quarter

The revenue of China’s beverage sector continued to decline in the first quarter of 2019, mainly due to decreased sales of soft drinks and baijiu. Beverage retail sales in Q1 2019 were down by 0.1% y/y to RMB 48.2bn. Baijiu sales in January-March 2019 plunged by 21.6% y/y to 2.2bn litres and soft drinks sales in the period fell by 11.4% y/y to 35.3mn tonnes. Baijiu production in Q1 2019 plummeted by 25.9% y/y to 2.1bn litres, due to decreased demand for low–end products and increased exports. The output of beer during this period slid by 6.3% y/y to 8.5bn litres. Grape wine output in Q1 2019 slumped by 46.4% y/y to 105mn litres. The production of soft drinks in Q1 2019 dropped by 8.2% y/y to 35.5mn tonnes.
