Chile Mining Sector Report 2020/2021

In 2019, Chile consolidated its position as the world’s leading copper mine producer, with a 28% share in global output; the second biggest molybdenum miner, with 19.8%; and the seventh largest producer of silver, with 5.1%. The country also ranked first in the production of iodine, with a 59% global share, second in lithium compounds (29%) and eighth in potassium compounds (2.3%). During the year, mining was Chile’s fourth largest economic sector, accounting for 9.4% of GDP, 2.9% of formal employment and 55% of national exports. The country’s mining sector showed extraordinary resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of 2020, as miners’ new business strategies and higher international prices pushed up output of key minerals such as copper. Although the sector is likely to have a poor performance in the second half of 2020, it is poised for a quick recovery in 2021 thanks to a robust pipeline of investment projects and rebounding global demand.​
