Chile Agriculture Sector Report 2021-2022

Chile holds leading positions in the production and export of several key agricultural commodities such as cherries, grapes, apples, walnuts, poultry meat and salmon. Agriculture plays a major socio-economic role in the country, accounting for 4% of GDP in January to September 2020 and providing 6.7% of formal employment at end-October 2020. Moreover, the sector is among the leading exporters of Chile’s economy, with a 19.9% share of national exports and a trade surplus of USD 7.9bn between January and October 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic had a minor impact on agricultural activities in Chile, which continued at relatively normal levels in 2020. Nevertheless, the sector suffered from adverse weather conditions (prolonged droughts and water shortages), intensifying competition from farmers from neighbouring countries, as well as lower foreign demand and international prices of key export products, such as cherries and grapes.​
