Chile has a relatively developed and diversified agriculture sector, with a leading position in the production and export of several key commodities, such as grapes, cherries, apples, berries, walnuts, poultry meat and salmon. Agriculture has a major socio-economic role, showing a growth rate well above that of GDP in the first nine months of 2018, and providing 9.4% of formal employment at end-2018. The sector is particularly important for Chile in terms of foreign currency generation, accounting for 18.9% of national exports and generating a trade surplus of USD 10.8bn in 2018. Nevertheless, the country has lagged behind other nations in Latin America in the development of key crop and livestock segments, such as cereals and beef cattle breeding. Chile therefore continues to rely on imports to satisfy local demand for wheat, maize and beef.
