The direct and indirect economic contribution of Brazil’s tourism and leisure sector reached BRL 551.5bn (USD 139.9bn) in 2019 or 7.7% of the country’s GDP, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). The sector has a major social role, as at end-2019 it was responsible for the creation of 7.4mn jobs –including direct, indirect and induced jobs –or 7.9% of the total in Brazil. It is also a key generator of foreign exchange earnings, attracting USD 5.9bn in the form of international tourism receipts in 2019.
