Brazil is among the global leaders in renewable energy generation, having the world’s largest biomass power capacity, and ranking third and ninth, respectively, in terms of hydropower and wind power capacity at the end of 2016. During that year, renewable energy sources (RES) accounted for 80.7% of Brazil’s installed capacity and 84.6% of the power generated in the country. Although hydropower continued to dominate the country’s electric energy mix, with about 74% of total power generation in 2016, wind power has been the fastest-growing energy source over the last years in line with the government’s efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix and reduce vulnerability to climate change. Between 2011 and 2016, power generation from wind farms increased 12-fold. The nascent solar power industry has also witnessed an exponential growth since 2013, supported by a favourable regulatory framework and active promotion of the use of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems.
