The COVID-19 pandemic and the related quarantine measures decreased the GVA of the trade sector in Brazil by 3.1% y/y in 2020. An additional negative impact came from the depreciation of the national currency by 23.6% against the US dollar, which pushed up prices of imported products and reduced the purchasing power of households. These negative effects were partially mitigated by the creation of 142,690 formal jobs in 2020, due to strong performance of the labour market in the beginning of the year and the government’s Employment and Income Preservation programme. The average monthly incomes of employees also grew in real terms, by 2.8% y/y. ​
