The third quarter of 2020 was marked by a recovery of retail trade in Brazil. According to the IBGE Monthly Trade Survey, nominal sales revenue expanded by 10.8% y/y – the fastest pace since the beginning of the survey. In real terms, when adjusted for inflation, retail sales volume rose by 6.3% y/y. The elimination of the COVID-19-related restrictions on several retail channels coupled with the gradual resumption of economic activity were the main factors behind the recovery of the sector. An additional positive impact came from the record-low interest rates of Brazil’s central bank, which encouraged borrowing activity by both households and businesses. Moreover, the government’s emergency income support programme preserved the disposable income of the most vulnerable population.
