The agriculture, livestock and fisheries sector in Brazil plays a key role in the domestic economy, accounting for 4.7% of total GDP, 24% of total export value, and 3.7% of total employment in 2016. The GDP of the sector registered a 6.6% y/y decrease in real terms in 2016, affected by extreme weather and the severe economic crisis faced by the country over the last two years. The projections of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) for the 2016/2017 crop year, however, are extremely optimistic, with crop production estimated to reach the record level of 240.9mn tonnes, registering an increase of 30.4% y/y.
