Serbia's leading fertilizer producer HIP-Azotara, set up in 1959, manufactures mineral fertilizers and nitric compounds, which are all used to produce fertilizer needed for the farming industry.
The company, based in the town of Pancevo near the Danube river, is the only producer of ammonia and urea in the country.
The firm suffered a blow during NATO's air strikes in 1999, when bombs heavily damaged its ammonia and fertilizer plants.
In April 2006, Lithuanian companies Arvi and Sanitex acquired full control of Azotara Pancevo for EUR 13 million and pledged to invest another EUR 30 million over the next five years. The Lithuanian buyers won in an auction over Czech Agrofert Holding A.S. and Hungarian Nitrogenmuvek Rt.
In January 2009, the contact was cancelled after the buyers breached it.
