Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), established in 1945, is a state power company, directly engaged in the generation, dispatching and sales of electricity and heat in Serbia.
The utility is also active in the businesses of coal production, processing and transport, steam and hot water production, water power utilisation as well as wholesale trade in fuel and similar products.
Elektroprivreda Srbije is the largest producer of lignite coal in the country, with an annual production of around 40 million tonnes.
In January 2005, the local government adopted a decision on the establishment of two public companies - Electroprivreda Srbije (generation, transmission and sale of electricity) and Electromreza Srbije (power transmission and transmission system management). Electric Power Industry of Serbia assumed the assets, liabilities and employees of EPS.
