Russia’s new digital strategy sees 5G roll-out in 2021

Russia will aim to roll-out 5G in five cities with over 1mn people population by 2021 and in 10 cities by 2024, bne Intellinews reported citing the new roadmap released by the state technology agency Rostec for the Digital Economy National Programme. The launch of 5G technology should cost some RUB 650bn (USD 10bn) according to preliminary estimates. The government, however, prefers those money to be spend at home and wants to primarily use domestically producers servers for the new technology. Document also cites Huawei, ZTE, Nokia, Cisco, Qualcomm, Verizon as potential technology partners in the 5G push.

bne Intellinews said earlier reports indicate Russia would use the 4.4-4.99 GHz range to develop the 5G network, similarly to China and Japan. Most other countries use 3.4-3.8 GHz range, which in Russia is used by military and state security agencies.
